Chiang Mai is a bustling city in the North of Thailand, some 700 km to the north of Bangkok. It has a resident population of about one million people, including a large student body of some 35 000 in close proximity to The Centre, the primary focus of work here at The Centre. Chiang Mai lies at the base of Doi Suthep mountain (1601m) and is well serviced with an international airport, Western style shopping malls and ATM's. Nevertheless. the city's history spans 700 years. There is a moated old city, the moat forming the sides of a square. Traditional street vendors and night markets are very much part of the cluttered street scene here, as are the numerous motorbikes that compete for space on the roads along with Thailand's unique mode of public transport, the tuk-tuks and songthaews. Pollution is quite a problem here and pedestrians need to take special care crossing roads and walking along broken pavements. The tropical heat and humidity can take some getting used to at first but it does mean an abundance of lush vegetation and delicious tropical fruits. Visitors can be assured of a warm welcome in more ways than one. Thailand is not called the "land of smiles" for nothing.
